Chapter 19

“I’ve talked with my ‘in’ with the records department,” Jaenna told Gaige as they strode to their respective dorms the following evening. “She’s going to check all the records for a Lyrica Dupond, or a Lyrica Lightly.”

“Really? That’s great. Thank you.”

“I told you, I want to help. She said she’ll have something by morning.”

Gaige felt a surge of warmth in his heart. “Thanks, Jaenna, this means a lot to me.”

She gave him a curious sideways look. “You’re starting to mean a lot to me, buddy. I can’t figure it out. Every time I wake up I start thinking about you. It’s not like I’m attracted to young guys or anything.”

“You talk like you’re so old.”

“Older than you, I guarantee it. Anyway, here’s where we part.” She glanced at the armed guard standing outside the men’s dorm. They stood at the doors every night until morning, to prevent any hanky-panky that might occur. “Guess there’s no chance of a PDA,” she whispered. She held out her hand.

When he took it, she gave him a formal handshake, winked at him, turned on her heel and sauntered away.

Gaige watched her curvy hips swish and sway, wishing he could still have ordinary sex. He’d become a chain smoker just so he could try out her plan for quitting. He sighed and made his way to bed. He placed Sojourn in the small glass box he’d been assigned for “rat transport and safety,” and climbed under the sheets.

Within minutes the teacher started talking. “We’re going to be working on advanced techniques this evening,” he said.

“Oh, yeah? What are those?” Gaige whispered.

“Enter the barrier and we’ll proceed.”

Gaige closed his eyes, slipped into the increasingly familiar brain space, and waited.

“Okay, open your inner sight.”

Gaige did as told, seeing rows and rows of human cages. “Where are we?” His red darkness hit him like a thunderbolt, his right eye blazing crimson, his cravings making him want to devour someone.

“We’re in a maximum security prison. This is death row. All these inmates are scheduled for execution. Follow me.” They strode down the aisle between cells. Each cell had a steel door with one small viewing window.

Gaige walked with the tall green teacher, looking at the hardened faces, barely able to keep it together. Some of them sat slumped on their cots. Others played cards. Others paced their cells. Each looked like they could do some serious damage if let out, but nothing like he currently felt capable of—he felt certain he could rip them limb from limb and not break a sweat. “They can’t see or hear us, can they?”

“No, but they’ll feel the effects of what I’m going to teach you.”

“Oh, and what’s that?” Gaige asked, frowning.

“Killing techniques.”

“Fuck me,” Gaige said. “More of this shit? Don’t forget, my mother was an empath. I take after her. That means I feel shit and am not inclined to snuff people.”

“You’ve got to learn despite your tendencies.” He stopped in front of one cell, peering at the occupant. “Let’s try this guy.
